S2 7.9 Class Association
Thank you for visiting the S2 7.9 Class Website. We look forward to seeing you out on the water.
The 2019 edition of the Class Championship had varying weather conditions, from sunny and no wind to crazy wind to fog and rain. On Thursday after check-in about half the fleet went out for the practice race on a beautiful evening with good wind. Friday was a beautiful sunny day, however there was no wind and the Race Committee held us at the dock. Saturday looked promising with the threat of rain and big wind later in the day. The first race on Saturday started with 21 boats on the line and winds around 10 knots. The wind quickly began to build on the second leg and was in the high teens by the end of the race. The second race started with winds in the high teens and most boats had their smaller jib up. As the race went on, the gusts kept getting higher and higher with gusts of 30 knots seen on some boats. The downwind legs were interesting to say the least. Yards before the finish, the top three boats were hit with a large gust and all three broached. With numerous boats broaching and winds continuing to increase with a storm front impending, Race Committee smartly sent everyone back in. Saturday night was the annual banquet with fantastic food provided by Racine Yacht Club. Upon arrival to RYC on Sunday morning, competitors were met with rain, wind and fog. The S2 BOD along with RC decided to call the regatta since you were unable to see the other side of the harbor because of the fog. A special owners meeting was called to change the rules so that one race constitutes a regatta. After only two races Smile & Wave and Fun Uncle were tied with 4 points. It was decided to award co-champions as only two races were sailed. The annual owners meeting was held Friday afternoon with some upcoming rules changes. Look for meeting minutes soon. Thank you to Racine Yacht Club for putting on a great regatta and we look forward to seeing you in Holland, MI next year.
